Darren had just finished a straightforward blocked drain job in Epsom. The blockage was cleared in around 30 minutes, and as we always try to do, he carried out one of our complimentary 10-minute CCTV inspections afterwards. Everything looked in good order, so the customer had the reassurance that there wasn’t a more serious problem hiding further down the line.

From there, Darren headed over to Oakley Mead in Godstone for the next call, where the customer had a blocked kitchen waste system. What looked like another routine blockage quickly turned into something much more interesting.

After investigating, Darren found that a newly installed kitchen had been connected into an old surface water gully at the rear of the property. Instead of discharging into the foul drainage system, the kitchen sink and washing machine were both emptying into a soakaway that had originally been designed to take roof water only.

Over time, grease, food waste, detergent residue and washing machine debris had clogged the soakaway until it could no longer cope. The result was the blocked kitchen waste system the customer had called us out to.

Darren explained the cause to the customer and recommended that the kitchen installers reconnect the waste pipe back into the original foul drainage system, routing it internally behind the new kitchen units if necessary. We also recommended further investigation of the old clay gully, including jetting and a complimentary 10-minute CCTV survey, to confirm its condition and rule out any additional defects.
Rather than simply clearing another blockage, the customer was left knowing exactly why it had happened and what the proper long-term solution would be.
