Gerry attended a drainage job in Esher, near New Malden, parking his van on the public road while he investigated the drainage around the property.
One of the important checks was the surface water drainage and the location of the public surface water sewer to establish whether a connection could be possible. The ground conditions in this area can be problematic. There is a lot of clay, which is not particularly porous, so simply putting surface water into a soakaway is not always going to give a reliable long-term solution.
This is where a good drainage plan becomes important. Before recommending any work, we need to understand where the existing rainwater goes, how well the ground can absorb it and where the public surface water sewer is located. Depending on the findings, the permanent solution could be an improved surface water drainage system or potentially a connection into the public surface water sewer, subject to the necessary surveys and approval.
It is a good example of why we don’t just look at the immediate drainage problem. The ground, the existing drainage and the available public sewers all need to be considered before deciding on the right solution.
