ASL tanker at a property in Redhill with a manhole cover in the paved yard
CCTV survey still showing a dropped joint in old clay pipework on a job in Redhill

While on emergency tanker call-out duty from our Guildford depot, one of our engineers was asked to attend a property on Earlswood Road in Redhill. The customer had tried to clear the blocked drain without success, so ASL was called out with the tanker.

The first job was to completely empty and clean the drainage system. Using the tanker, the engineer removed everything from the drain, and whatever had jammed the pipework was eventually pulled through, leaving the system flowing again.

A CCTV survey was then carried out, and that is when the real problem became obvious. The camera showed several severe dropped joints in the old glazed clay pipework beneath a wall. The wall no longer appeared to be providing enough support, allowing the drain to move and the joints to open up. The customer had previously tried to clear the blocked drain with another company without success, but those displaced joints were still catching debris, which is why the drain kept blocking.

ASL supplied the customer with CCTV photographs and recommendations for a permanent repair. Although the drain was left clear and running correctly, the engineer explained that the damage to the pipework was serious and that further blockages were inevitable unless the defective section was repaired. The customer understood the situation and agreed to arrange the necessary repairs through our office.
