Blocked drains – cleared in a thirty-minute window?

| Billie Sharp

As you know from many of our previous blogs, our emphasis on ‘preventative’ measures will always play a critical role in any drainage system’s effectiveness. For this blog though, let’s look at what happens when it’s too late and the drain is already blocked. Sometimes, you may have been fortunate to have recognised an issue before a full blockage occurs, for example if your sewage water is draining away at a slower pace. However, you may not always be so fortunate, and you may need help NOW!!!!

Households can reduce the likelihood of encountering a blocked drain by paying closer attention to what they dispose of through the drainage system. Hair, food waste, fats and oils are some of the most common causes for blocked drains.
By the time the drain is blocked, preventative measures are no longer the course of action. At this point, the primary goal will be to clear the blockage, but in doing so, you may inevitably find further undesirable issues lurking below which may have been the route course to the blockage in the first place.
Whilst many drainage firms, including ours, commit to clearing a blocked drain in a thirty-minute window, here at ASL Ltd, we believe it is also prudent to spend a little more time checking the other drains for any cleaning or repair requirements. This brings us back again to a ‘preventative’ measure, reducing the risk of the other drains suffering the same fate.
There are a few elements we recommend checking during the visit including further blockages, wear and tear, cracks, corrosion, and root ingress. Capturing any issues at this stage has the potential to prevent even bigger issues down the line. We may be able to rectify these issues on the spot or discuss a plan to implement necessary repairs – thus providing you with peace of mind and longer-term savings.
The never-ending cycle lurking below.
So, what happens if the sewage what is not discharged properly through the pipes to the public sewer or private system?
If the sewage is not properly discharged, it will seep into the ground through the gaps in the pipe which have been caused by a partially Blocked Drain.
This subsidence is a result of blockages or partial blockages that have been left for long periods of time.
Repetitive blocked drains can cause damp affecting internal building finishes such as plaster and paint, not to mention the stability of the building’s foundations. The risk of damp is increased further when the sewage water is disposed through drains that run around and closer to the building.
