Drainage Specialists Serving Sutton and Surrounding Areas

ASL covers Sutton and the surrounding parts of the borough, including Cheam, Belmont, Carshalton and North Cheam. Sutton’s town centre sits among dense Victorian and Edwardian terraces, with interwar semis and later estates spreading out towards the borough boundary. ASL’s own directly employed engineers handle every job, using ASL’s own equipment.

Drainage Specialists Serving Sutton and Surrounding Areas

What We Can Clear for You in Sutton

Toilets, sinks, kitchen waste, outside drains, gullies and inspection chambers across Sutton's residential streets. The dense terraced housing near the centre often has older, sometimes shared drainage runs, while the semis and estates further out tend to be more straightforward. Soakaways, main drain connections and CCTV drain surveys are part of the regular workload, alongside drainage for the shops, offices and retail units around the high street.

Toilets

Backing up because of an outside drain blockage, not internal plumbing.

Ground-floor sinks

Draining slowly or overflowing due to blocked external pipes.

Manholes & chambers

Inspection chambers in the garden or driveway that have surcharged.

Downpipes & gullies

Rainwater downpipes and gully outlets that won't clear.

Soakaways

Systems that aren't draining water away as they should.

Commercial drainage

Foul and surface water systems for businesses of any size.

Why Do Drains Get Blocked?

Sutton sits largely on London Clay with some chalk influence from the North Downs further south, and sustained rain can put pressure on older surface-water drainage across the borough’s flatter residential streets. In the Victorian terraces nearer the centre, root ingress from mature street trees and displaced joints in ageing clay pipework are common. Fat and grease build-up in kitchens and wet wipes flushed away remain frequent causes everywhere, and on some of the older terraced conversions, shared drainage runs occasionally reach capacity where several properties feed into the same pipe.

Kitchen habits

Fat, grease and food waste hardening inside the pipe.

Bathroom items

Wet wipes and sanitary products, even 'flushable' ones.

Nature

Tree roots, silt and leaves finding their way in.

Wear & tear

Scale build-up, cracks or old pipe materials failing.

Build issues

Renovation debris or pipes laid at the wrong gradient.

How We Fix It, Our 5-Step Process

  1. Call and rapid response An engineer is sent to your Sutton address, usually the same day.
  2. On-site diagnosis The blockage is assessed, with a CCTV drain survey used where the cause isn't immediately clear.
  3. Clearing the blockage Jetting, rodding or mechanical drain milling, chosen to suit the pipe and problem found.
  4. Confirming the fix The engineer confirms the drain is flowing freely and shows the evidence. Where the drain allows for it, a complimentary 10-minute look-see with the camera follows, at no charge. It's part of the blocked drain service. The purpose is simply to check the pipe is clear and to pick up an obvious fault, which on Sutton's shared terraced runs is often useful to know early. A full CCTV drainage survey is a different service, more involved, with its own equipment and a written report.
  5. Reporting and next steps Where no-dig lining or a patch repair is needed, ASL explains the findings and provides a free estimate.
Recent Drainage Work in Sutton

Case in Point: Cesspit Inspection at Sutton Scotney Fire Station

Recent Drainage Work in Sutton

As part of a programme inspecting drainage at fire stations and schools, our CCTV survey at Sutton Scotney Fire Station found waste building up in the pipework and a cesspit whose sewage level had risen around 200mm above the incoming drain. Left unchecked, it could have overflowed. We brought in our tanker, emptied the cesspit and produced a full report with photographs, catching the problem before it became a disruptive emergency. Read the full job on our Sutton case study page.

Having found ASL Limited on multiple recommendation sites I can see why - they have been a pleasure to deal with from start to finish! To assist with investigative works we had Mark and Alex out initially and then Ryan and Max out for further work - both teams were an absolute pleasure to have at our house: polite, punctual and most importantly they were experts in their field. ASL rightly have an excellent reputation as I would not go anywhere else if I need any future help!

We had a blocked drain. Darren attended and confirmed that the blockage was beyond our boundary therefore not our responsibility. Thames water attended and refused to accept it was their issue. Darren returned and promptly cleared the drain for us. He was polite efficient skilled and hard working. We strongly recommend ASL for drainage work.

What a great service! Booked in when I needed it, turned up exactly on time, investigated and sorted the problem and I now have free flowing drains! Then, to cap it all, they wouldn't take my money and said 'we'll invoice you later'. Now that's how to inspire trust! Would I use ASL again? I'm hoping I won't need to but I'll be recommending them everywhere I can!

An outstanding company. Professional, responsive, honest and knowledgeable. A private treatment plant that continually malfunctioned (electrics installed inside the tank. What genius thought that was a good idea?!) has been completely upgraded by ASL. Trenches dug, bespoke risers made on site, new electrics installed, the lot - all done with care and expertise. I cannot recommend them enough. Every single one of their staff are a credit to them.

FAQs

Can I get an engineer out the same day in Sutton?

Usually, yes, and clearing the blockage typically takes under 30 minutes once they've arrived.

What's a typical cost?

It depends on the blockage and whether the drainage run is shared with a neighbouring property. You'll get a free quote before anything's agreed, and it costs nothing to ask.

Who's responsible for the drain, me or Thames Water?

Thames Water covers the public sewer in Sutton. However, you're responsible for pipework inside your own boundary, though shared drains in older conversions can complicate that.

Do shared drains cause more blockages in Sutton's terraces?

Sometimes, where several properties feed into one pipe, capacity can become an issue, and tracing the source takes a bit more work.

What does a CCTV drain survey show?

A clear picture of what's causing a blockage inside the pipe is used when the cause isn't obvious another way. That's the full survey, booked in and reported on. The complimentary 10-minute look-see we include after clearing a blockage is a shorter check done on the spot, not the same thing.

Is digging up the garden always necessary?

No, a no-dig lining or a patch repair can often do the job instead, depending on the survey.
