Emergency Blocked Drain in Kingston – Structural Lining Solution

One of our drainage engineers, Darren, attended an emergency blocked-drain call in Kingston-Upon-Thames after the customer reported gurgling noises from the toilets and slow-draining sinks throughout the property.

Although Darren lives and works out of the Ashtead area, he also works from our Guildford depot and regularly attends drainage emergencies throughout Kingston, Weybridge, Ashtead, Dorking, Merstham and Horley.

The Kingston job

When Darren arrived, he began by inspecting the drainage system through the inspection chambers located within a small rear yard.

The first chamber was holding a high level of water. Darren carried out a quick test using his drain rods. As pressure was applied, the water level dropped away, only to slowly return to its previous level. This suggested there was a restriction further downstream.

Moving to the next inspection chamber, Darren immediately found evidence of a common drainage problem. Fat, grease and oil were floating on the surface of the wastewater.

Using his rods again, Darren encountered significant resistance. After carefully applying further pressure, the blockage suddenly released. Water levels dropped quickly, and gurgling could be heard throughout the drainage system as normal flow returned.

As part of our service, Darren then carried out a CCTV drain survey (called a quick look-see) using one of our inspection cameras.

The camera footage showed that the interior walls of the drain were heavily coated with grease. Darren used a jetting machine to thoroughly clean the pipework before carrying out a second CCTV inspection.

Once the pipe was clean, a more significant issue became visible.

Several open joints were discovered within the drainage line.

This is a common cause of recurring blockages. Wastewater can collect at uneven joints, allowing grease and debris to accumulate over time. The evidence was clear: fat deposits were visible not only on the sides of the pipe but also on its roof, indicating repeated surcharging and slow drainage over a long period.

Darren explained the findings to the customer and discussed the available repair options.

Because the joints had not moved too far out of alignment, the most cost-effective long-term solution was structural drain lining. This method would seal the open joints, strengthen the pipework and create a smooth internal surface to improve flow.

The customer agreed with the recommendation.

Darren submitted his findings to our office, and a quotation was issued the same day.

The blockage clearance, CCTV survey and pipe cleaning were all completed in less than an hour.

One week later, our lining team returned and installed a structural liner to complete the repair.

The customer was delighted with both the speed of response and the efficiency of the work carried out.

During the visit, the customer commented:

“How can you do this job? It’s so messy and smelly.”

Darren smiled and replied:

“It’s a team effort. It’s not just me.”

The successful outcome was only possible because the drainage engineer, office team and lining crew all worked together to diagnose the problem, provide a solution and complete the repair quickly.
