Flooding & Pooling
Solutions for Standing Water
Surface water flooding occurs when rainwater simply has nowhere to go. This leads to standing water in gardens, driveways and car parks, or worse—water flowing towards your house instead of away from it.
Over time, this causes moss, slippery algae, and long-term damage to your foundations and landscaping.
In simple terms: Flooding happens when the ground or drainage system can’t cope. ASL finds the cause and fixes it permanently.

Why Flooding & Pooling Happens
It is rarely just “bad weather.” Flooding is usually a symptom of a specific failure in your drainage or ground conditions. Common causes include:
- Blocked Gullies: Driveway grates filled with silt and leaves.
- Damaged Pipes: Collapsed or crushed drains underground.
- Soakaway Failure: The underground pit is full, undersized, or blocked.
- Ground Levels: The land slopes towards the property, directing water the wrong way.
- Clay Soil: The ground is too dense to absorb rain (poor infiltration).
- Tree Roots: Roots growing into the pipes and blocking the flow.
- Neighbour Runoff: Water flowing onto your property from land next door.
- Inadequate Drainage: Old systems that can’t handle new extensions or patios.
How We Find the Cause
We don’t guess. We carry out a structured investigation to find the underlying issue.
1. CCTV Surveying – We look inside the pipes to check for collapses, blockages, tree roots, or structural damage.
2. Gully & Chamber Inspection – We lift the lids on your drains to check for silt build-up, damaged traps, or capacity issues.
3. Level Assessment – We check the ground levels to confirm if the water is flowing in the right direction or if the pipes were installed with the wrong slope (gradient).
4. Soakaway & Ground Testing – We test the soil to see if it can absorb water and check if your existing soakaway is still working.
5. Tracing & Mapping – If the layout is unclear, we trace the pipes to find hidden outlets or missing connections.

Our Solutions:
How We Fix It
Based on what we find, we provide a practical, long-term solution.
1. Clearing & Restoring Existing Systems – Sometimes the system is fine, it just needs a heavy-duty clean.
- Gully Sucking: Using a vacuum tanker to remove sludge and debris.
- High-Pressure Jetting: Blasting through blockages.
- Root Removal: Cutting out tree roots and repairing the damage.
2. Installing New Drainage – If the current system isn’t up to the job, we install new features:
- Land Drains: Perforated pipes buried in gardens to dry out boggy lawns.
- New Surface Water Drains: Installing fresh pipework to handle the volume.
- French Drains: Gravel-filled trenches that let water filter away naturally.
- Channel Drains (AKA ‘ACO channels’): Linear metal or plastic grates (often seen on driveways) to catch surface runoff.
- Soakaways: Installing modern crate or ring systems to hold rainwater underground.
- Borehole Soakaways: Deep drilled solutions for properties on heavy clay soil.
3. Resolving Structural Issues
- Repairing or replacing collapsed pipes.
- Correcting pipe gradients so water flows downhill properly.
- Reinstating driveways and surfaces after digging.
4. Improving Water Flow
- Adjusting ground levels to direct water away from the building.
- Installing pathways for controlled water runoff.
- Providing solutions for runoff coming from neighbouring land.
5. Preventative Maintenance
- Routine gully cleaning and pre-winter checks to stop the problem returning.
