Gully Sucking
The Deep Clean for Your Outdoor Drains
“Gully sucking” might sound like a strange industry term, but it is simply the most effective way to clean your outdoor drainage.
The gullies are those metal grates you see at the edge of roads, in car parks, and at the bottom of driveways. Their job is to catch rainwater and channel it away. However, they also catch leaves, silt, grit, and litter.
Inside the drain, there is a “trap” or bucket designed to collect this debris, which needs to be regularly cleaned out to maintain function. Once that bucket is full, the water has nowhere to go, leading to floods and puddles.
In simple terms: We use a specialist tanker to vacuum out the mud and debris, restoring your drainage so the water can flow away again.

Why Do Gullies Need Cleaning?
Gullies work hard all year round. Without regular maintenance, they eventually get overwhelmed by:
- Nature: Leaves, soil, and silt washing off the garden.
- Road Debris: Grit, stones, and litter.
- Building Work: Dust and rubble entering the system during renovations.
When a gully is blocked, it causes flooding. This isn’t just annoying; standing water damages tarmac, creates slippery ice patches in winter, and smells unpleasant.

How We Do It: The Process
We don’t just clear the surface; we clean the whole system to ensure it works properly.
1. Lift and Access – We lift the heavy metal grate to get access to the chamber below.
2. Vacuum Extraction – We use a powerful vacuum tanker to suck out the contents of the gully pot. It removes wet leaves, heavy grit, stones, and thick sludge, leaving the chamber completely empty.
3. High-Pressure Jetting – Emptying the pot is only half the job. We use high-pressure water jets to flush the outlet pipe. This clears out any remaining silt and ensures the water flows freely.
4. The Health Check (CCTV) – If the gully was blocked for a long time, or if we suspect damage, we can lower a camera into the drain. This lets us check if the pipe has collapsed or been damaged by tree roots.
5. Safe Disposal – We don’t leave a mess behind. All the waste we remove is taken off-site in our tanker and disposed of at a licensed facility.
ASL’s Approach: Why We Are Different
We combine heavy-duty equipment with a proactive mindset. Here is how we ensure you get the best result:
- The Right Equipment: We have tankers and jetting equipment. This means we can clear the blockage and clean the pipe in one visit.
- Honest Reporting: If we clean a gully and find the pipe is broken, we will tell you. We use CCTV to prove it, so you aren’t paying for cleaning when what you actually need is a repair.
- Proactive Maintenance: For schools, private roads, and commercial sites, we offer scheduled cleaning (usually in late autumn). We track when your drains need doing so you don’t have to worry about winter floods.
- Minimal Disruption: We work quickly and tidily, ensuring car parks and driveways are back in use as soon as possible.

Who Is This For?
- Homeowners: Fixing driveways that flood every time it rains.
- Private Road Associations: Keeping shared roads clear and preventing pothole damage caused by standing water.
- Commercial Sites & Car Parks: Ensuring customers can park without stepping into deep water.
- Schools & Councils: Keeping playgrounds safe and compliant.
The Benefits to You
- No More Floods: Stops water pooling on your property.
- Safety: Reduces the risk of ice patches in winter and slippery algae in summer.
- Protect Your Surfaces: Standing water degrades tarmac and paving; keeping it dry saves you money on resurfacing.
- Compliance: Ensures you are meeting your maintenance obligations for surface water.
Our goal is to keep surface water drainage operating efficiently and to protect homes, businesses and roads from avoidable flooding.
