Why You Might Need a New Water Main
Most people don’t think about this pipe until there is a problem. You might need a replacement if:
- You have Lead pipes: Many older homes still use lead supply pipes, which can be a health risk. Modern plastic pipes are safer.
- Low Pressure: If your shower is a trickle or the bath takes forever to fill, an old, narrow pipe might be the cause.
- Frequent Leaks: If you are constantly patching up leaks, it is often cheaper and safer to replace the whole run.
- Building Work: You are building an extension over the current route of the pipe.

How We Install & Re-Route Water Mains
We know the idea of replacing a main pipe sounds disruptive. However, our process is designed to be fast, tidy, and compliant with all Water Authority regulations.
1. Site Assessment & Scanning – Safety comes first. We survey your property to determine the best route for the new pipe. We use specialist CAT scanners to locate any existing underground electric cables and identify if any other utlilities are likely to be in the area (like gas, drainage, or cable TV) to ensure we avoid them during the installation.
2. The “No-Dig” Moling Method – For most installations, we avoid digging a trench through your garden. Instead, we use Moling.
- We excavate two small pits: a “Launch Pit” and a “Receiving Pit” (usually about 10 meters apart).
- We use a pneumatic (air-powered) “mole” that tunnels underground between the two pits.
- The surface of your driveway, lawn, or patio between the pits remains completely untouched.
3. Excavation (Where Necessary) – If the ground is too stony for moling, or the distance is very short, we may need to hand-dig a trench. We do this neatly and ensure the trench is the correct depth—typically 750mm. This depth is vital to protect your water supply from freezing in winter.
4. Pipe Installation & Connection – We install high-quality blue MDPE (plastic) pipework. This material is durable, corrosion-free, and flexible.
- External Connection: We connect the new pipe to the external stop tap or boundary box in the street.
- Internal Connection: We bring the pipe into your property and connect it to your internal stopcock.
5. Pressure Testing – Before we fill anything in, we pressure test the new system. This guarantees that the joints are watertight and the pressure is stable.
6. Reinstatement – Once the work is tested, we backfill the pits or trenches and compact the soil. We then reinstate the surface—whether it is tarmac, concrete, paving slabs, or turf—leaving your property looking neat and tidy.
Why Re-Route (Move) a Pipe?
Sometimes the pipe is in good condition, but it is just in the wrong place. We typically re-route pipes when Building Extensions. You generally cannot build a new foundation over an existing water main (if it bursts later, you would have to dig up your kitchen floor). We divert the pipe around the new footprint of the building, ensuring it remains accessible and safe.
