Why Do Leaks Happen?
It isn’t usually anything you have done wrong. Water pipes are under constant pressure and face the elements 24/7. Common causes include:
- Age: Old iron, lead, or early plastic pipes eventually corrode or become brittle.
- Movement: The ground shifts naturally over time (or freezes in winter), putting stress on the pipe.
- Tree Roots: Roots are strong and can squeeze or crack pipes.

How We Fix It: The 4-Step Process
We know the idea of digging up your property is stressful. We aim to be surgical—digging only where we need to.
1. Leak Detection – Before we pick up a shovel, we need to know where the problem is. We use non-invasive methods like listening sticks (which amplify the sound of escaping water) and checking for areas of water escaping above ground to identify the leak. This ensures we don’t dig up your whole garden looking for a needle in a haystack. If there are no obvious signs of where the leak could be, we may need to excavate several small strategic pits to cut and cap the pipe to narrow down where the leak is.
2. Excavation (Digging Down) – Once we know where the leak is, we carefully excavate that specific area. We expose the damaged section of the pipe to see if it is a crack, a burst, or a loose joint.
3. The Repair – Depending on what we find, we will:
- Cut out the damaged section and insert a new piece of pipe.
- Replace faulty fittings or joints.
- Remove unsafe materials (like old lead pipes) if they are part of the damaged section.
4. Testing & Reinstatement – We don’t just patch it and run. We turn the water back on to check the pressure and ensure the leak is 100% gone. Once we are happy, we fill the hole back in and reinstate the surface (whether it is soil, gravel, or concrete) as best we can.
Repair vs. Replacement: Being Honest with You
Sometimes, a simple patch isn’t the right answer. If we dig down and find your pipe is made of old lead, or if it is in terrible condition with multiple weak spots, a repair might just be a “sticking plaster.”
