Pumping Stations
Moving Water Against Gravity
Water naturally wants to flow downhill. But what happens if your bathroom, basement, or extension is lower than the main sewer in the street? Or your property is too far away to achieve the gradient?
That is where a Pumping Station comes in.
It is essentially a buried tank with a powerful pump inside. It collects your wastewater and, when the tank gets full, pumps it uphill to join the main sewer system or other discharge point.
In simple terms: It gives nature a helping hand, lifting wastewater (or rainwater) to where it needs to go when gravity can’t do the job.

Why You Might Need a Pump System
Most homes rely on gravity, but a pumping station is essential if:
- You have a basement: The drains are lower than the pipes in the street.
- You are building an extension: The new rooms are too far away or too low to connect to your existing drains naturally.
- Your property is on a slope: The house sits in a dip below the main road.
- You have a private system: You need to pump waste to a septic tank or treatment plant further up the garden.
- You need to move rainwater: Rainwater gathers in one area of the garden that floods and you need to divert it to a soakaway or watercourse elsewhere.

How ASL Can Help
Whether you need a brand-new system or help with a broken one, we cover it all.
1. Installation – We design and install systems that are reliable and quiet. We supply:
- Foul Water Stations: For toilets and household waste.
- Surface Water Stations: To stop rainwater flooding low-lying driveways or patios.
- Twin Pump Systems: We often recommend having two pumps. If one fails, the other takes over—giving you a safety net.
- Macerators: Pumps that grind up solids to prevent blockages (essential for some setups).
2. Repairs & Upgrades – Pumps are mechanical, and like a car, they can break down. If your pump has seized, your electrics keep tripping, or the alarm is buzzing, we can fix it. We also upgrade old, noisy pumps with modern, energy-efficient models.
3. Servicing & Maintenance – Because these systems are mechanical, they need regular check-ups. We offer scheduled servicing to:
- Lift and clean the pumps.
- Check the “Float Switches” (the sensors that tell the pump when to turn on).
- Clear out grease and sludge from the chamber.
- Test the alarm system.
- Why do this? A well-maintained pump lasts years longer and is far less likely to fail during a dinner party!
Common Signs of Trouble
You should call ASL immediately if:
- The Alarm is Sounding: Most systems have a buzzer or light to warn you of high water levels.
- Humming Noises: The pump is trying to run but is jammed or seized.
- Constant Running: The pump never turns off (this will burn the motor out quickly).
- Slow Draining: Toilets or sinks are sluggish or not flowing away properly.
- Tripping Electrics: Your fuse box trips whenever the pump tries to start.

Who Is This For?
- Homeowners: With basements, annexes, or low-lying gardens.
- Developers: Connecting new builds to the main sewer.
- Commercial Sites: Managing waste for schools, hotels, or offices.
- Landlords: Ensuring tenants have reliable drainage.
The Benefits to You
- Reliability: We ensure the system is sized correctly so it can handle the flow without blocking.
- Protection: A working pump prevents sewage backing up into your home.
- Peace of Mind: Our maintenance plans mean you don’t have to worry about what is happening underground.
- Compliance: We ensure your connection meets all local building and water authority regulations.
Don’t let gravity get you down. Let ASL keep your system flowing.
Whether it’s installation, repair or routine maintenance, ASL ensures pump stations work efficiently and safely.
