Moling is a clever, “trenchless” method of installing pipes. Instead of digging up the ground along the entire route, we simply dig a small pit every 10m or change of direction and tunnel between them underground.
In simple terms: We create a tunnel underground for the new pipe, leaving the surface above completely undisturbed between pits.

How We Do It: The Process
We follow a strict safety process to ensure we don’t hit any existing cables or pipes.
1. Scanning & Planning – Safety first. We use specialist CAT scanners to detect any existing underground electric cables and check supply routes for other services and utilities to plan a safe route for the mole.
2. The Launch Pits – We do have to dig a little bit. We excavate a small pit (roughly 1m x 0.5m) every 10m or change of direction to launch and receive the mole.
3. Sending the Mole – We use a pneumatic (air-powered) “mole.” This clever device hammers its way through the soil, creating a clean, compacted tunnel between the two pits. It typically travels about 750mm underground—safely below the frost line.
4. Pulling the Pipe – Once the tunnel is made, we pull the new water pipe (usually blue MDPE pipe) through the hole. If you are a contractor needing ducting for cables, we can pull that through too.
5. Connection & Cleanup – We connect your new water supply, test it to make sure it works perfectly, and then backfill the launch and receiving pits. We reinstate the surface so you can hardly tell we were there.
Is Moling Always Possible?
We pride ourselves on honest advice. While moling is fantastic, it isn’t magic. We cannot mole if:
- The route goes directly under a building.
- The ground is full of solid rock or heavy rubble.
- The area is too crowded with other utilities (making it unsafe).
In these rare cases, we will explain why and suggest the best alternative method.
