Main Sewer Connections
Getting You Connected
Connecting a property to the public sewer system isn’t as simple as just joining two pipes together. It involves strict regulations, applications to the Water Authority, and often digging in public roads.
At ASL, we handle the entire process. Whether you are building a new home or retiring an old septic tank, we bridge the gap between your private drains and the public network.
In simple terms: We handle the paperwork, the digging, and the connection to the main sewer — safely and legally.

When Do You Need a New Connection?
You usually need this service if you are:
- Building a new house: Getting the property connected to the mains for the first time.
- Building an extension: If your new room needs a new bathroom or kitchen connection.
- Switching from a private sewage system: You want to stop using a septic tank or cesspit and connect to the mains instead (no more emptying bills!).
- Rerouting: Moving drains to make way for building work.

How We Manage the Process
A sewer connection can involve a lot of planning, which could be quite daunting. However, don’t despair – we can guide you through every step so you don’t have to deal with the red tape alone.
1. Permission & Paperwork (Section 106) – Before anyone digs, you need approval from your local Water Authority (like Thames Water or Southern Water). This is called a “Section 106 application.” We can help you complete the application, provide the necessary technical drawings, and liaise with the authorities to get the green light.
2. The Site Survey – We visit the site to check the depth of the public sewer and plan the safest route for the pipe. We also check for other utilities (like gas and electric cables) in case this will affect the proposed route.
3. Excavation & Installation – Our qualified engineers excavate the ground to expose the public sewer. We then install the new connection pipe (often using a saddle or junction) and build any new inspection chambers required, as outlined in your consent to connect.
4. Working in the Road (Street Works) – If the sewer is under the pavement or the road, you need a contractor with specific “Street Works” qualifications. ASL holds the necessary licences to:
- Dig up public highways and footpaths.
- Set up safety barriers and traffic management.
- Reinstate (resurface) the road to council standards.
5. Testing & Sign-Off – Once the pipe is connected, we survey it to ensure it is structurally sound and flowing freely. We then arrange the final inspection with the Water Authority to get the connection signed off.
6. Putting it Back Together – We backfill the hole and reinstate the surface, whether it is a tarmac road, a grass verge, or your driveway, leaving the site clean and safe.
