One of our engineers, Darren, was called to a property in Winkfield, near Bracknell, after the homeowner experienced repeated drainage problems. Sewage was backing up towards the property instead of flowing away as it should.

The blockage itself turned out to be what we call a soft blockage. One push with the rods and the drain was flowing again. But that was only part of the job. Once the blockage had been cleared, Darren carried out ASL’s free 10-minute CCTV look-see survey. The drains further downstream were heavily contaminated and showed clear signs that the system had backed up before, so rather than leaving, he wanted to understand why.

The camera survey revealed the real cause. An inspection chamber had been slowly collapsing, with debris restricting the drainage. Every time the system struggled, wastewater had nowhere to go except back towards the property, eventually spilling out as sewage.

After clearing the drain and cleaning everything, Darren talked the customer through the findings using the CCTV footage. ASL recommended replacing the damaged chamber lid with a new heavy-duty inspection chamber lid suitable for HGV loading, together with high-pressure jetting to remove all the debris, plus improvements to the existing drainage arrangement. That would provide a reliable long-term solution instead of simply waiting for the next blockage.

ASL also explained the value of regular drainage servicing and inspections, since spotting defects early is usually far less expensive than waiting until a system fails. As always, the aim was to identify the cause of the problem, not just clear the symptoms, so the customer had practical advice, CCTV evidence and clear recommendations and could make an informed decision.
