Early one Friday, at around 5am to keep disruption to a minimum in a busy area, Darren attended a property near Twickenham, in Richmond, where water was suspected of getting into a basement. The inspection chamber sat beneath decking in a public walkway serving the premises, so Darren erected safety barriers, lifted the decking and gained access to the manhole.
He carried out a CCTV survey and high-pressure jetted the 150mm foul drain upstream and downstream, surveying from the inspection chamber towards the building. The pipework was found to contain a significant build-up of deposits and debris, which obscured the camera and prevented a clear view of the drain’s internal condition.
The drainage run is approximately 20 metres long, and ASL recommended that it be thoroughly cleaned with high-pressure water jetting before being re-inspected with CCTV, to establish whether there were any cracks, displaced joints, defective connections or other issues that could be contributing to the reported leak.
A further section of pipework in the property’s underground car park also needed inspecting as part of the investigation into persistent drainage smells in the basement. Because of the restricted access and height there, a smaller jetting vehicle and two operatives would be required. Darren reported the findings back to the client before deciding on the next step.
