Tanker hose emptying a private sewage treatment plant near Weybridge
Emergency blocked drain at a sewage treatment plant near Weybridge

A call came into the office for a blocked drain at a property in Cobham, between Woking and Weybridge. The customer also asked us to empty their sewage treatment plant while we were there.

Because the treatment plant needed emptying, Phil, one of our tanker drivers, was sent to the property with the sewage tanker, where he was met by Gerry. What initially sounded like a straightforward blocked drain and empty tanker quickly turned into something more serious.

The property had a good-quality sewage treatment plant, but when Gerry inspected it, the sewage level had risen far higher than it should have. The sewage water had actually risen above the electrical motor and equipment inside the treatment plant, causing the electrics to fuse.

This is a good example of why regular servicing and maintenance of a treatment plant is important. Even a very good treatment plant needs looking after. A planned service and empty is considerably cheaper and less disruptive than an emergency visit when the plant has already failed and requires emptying, cleaning and electrical attention.

We also suspected surface water or rainwater may have been entering the private sewage system, which could help explain why the plant had become overloaded. Rather than guessing, further investigation was recommended to establish whether unwanted rainwater was entering the foul drainage system.

The immediate problem was dealt with and the customer was left with a full report explaining what we had found, together with recommendations for a return visit and the further work required.
