Yes, I believe you can install a treatment plant yourself – but it wouldn’t be wise, it wouldn’t be prudent, and it would go against the rules.

It’s a very dangerous game, especially if it’s your first time doing so. Most people don’t realise how involved it is. Every first-timer makes mistakes, we all did – but we had support. If you truly want to install a treatment plant yourself, you’d be better off getting a job as a labourer on a drainage crew. Spend a couple of years doing it for real, on real jobs, and then maybe you could organise someone to help you or go along with you when it’s your turn. That’s how most of us learned.

But the truth is, the Environmental Agency has clear rules about who’s allowed to install these systems. They’re not just guidelines – they’re binding. You must be competent. You must know what you’re doing.

So yes, you can. But you really shouldn’t.
