After finishing a blocked drain call in Petersfield, Jed’s next job was only around 18 minutes away in Hammer, near Haslemere.
When Jed arrived, he found that all the drains on the site were blocked. The customer wanted the complete drainage system cleaned, inspected and surveyed. There was one obvious difficulty. No water was available on site, and the work needed finishing that day.
We do hold hydrant keys and a licence to use the water authority’s hydrants. The trouble is that drawing water that way means stopping and starting. On a building site, with a high-pressure jetting machine using 12 gallons a minute and the customer paying by the hour, that gets expensive for everyone. So we do it differently. We carry 1,000-litre containers on the back of a 7.5-tonne lorry, and Gerry drove that lorry to the site with a supply of clean water on board. That gave Jed everything he needed to jet and clean the drainage system properly without waiting on a hydrant.
Once the drains were cleaned and flowing, we carried out a CCTV survey to check their condition. We also produced a sketch showing the layout of the drains, together with CCTV video footage and a full report of our findings. The customer was left with the drains cleaned and working, but just as importantly, with a clear record of the drainage system and its condition so they could make an informed decision about any further work required.
