The ASL Approach: Cutting Through Traffic Jams for Smoother Drain Connections on Public Roads

| Gerry Rowe

Celebrating our Gerry's 80th Birthday with some of the team at ASL Limited

Connecting private homes and commercial properties to the main public sewer often requires work on public roads. This can unfortunately lead to traffic congestion and frustrated drivers. At ASL Limited, we understand how disruptive this can be, which is why we’ve developed an efficient, well-coordinated system designed to minimise disruption and keep traffic moving.

Why Traffic Jams Happen – and How We Prevent Them

Many contractors run into delays due to poor planning, lack of resources, or limited coordination. These issues can quickly escalate, resulting in unnecessary disruption and prolonged traffic delays. At ASL, we tackle these common pitfalls with a proactive, strategic approach:

Proactive Planning

We never just turn up and start digging. Every job is carefully planned in advance. This includes identifying potential challenges such as limited road access or unexpected ground conditions, and putting contingencies in place to deal with them efficiently.

Efficient Resource Management

Our in-house capabilities are a key part of our success. We own most of the equipment we use, and our yard is fully stocked with essential materials. This drastically reduces our reliance on external suppliers and avoids costly delays.

For example:

  • Our white containers can hold up to 3,000 litres of water or sewage.
  • We carry at least 3 tonnes of additional material in 1-tonne bags.
  • We always bring fittings, pipes, and grinding machines as standard.

Unused materials are returned to our yard at the end of each job, ready for the next.

Highly Skilled and Coordinated Teams

We have a team of 20 field operatives, supported by a four-person office communication team. Each of our working gangs is capable of operating independently, but they can also join forces when needed.

We even maintain an extra team on standby. While this adds to our operating costs, it pays dividends by allowing us to respond quickly to emergencies or schedule changes, keeping the entire operation on track and our team morale high. We set our people up for success.

Clear and Constant Communication

From the office to the roadside, we maintain open communication across all levels of our organisation. Everyone understands the plan, and updates are shared in real-time when circumstances change. This level of internal clarity ensures a smooth operation and rapid response to unforeseen challenges.

The Tangible Benefits for You and the Public

Our efficient approach is designed to benefit not only our clients, but also the general public and local authorities:

  • Reduced Traffic Delays: Meticulous planning and on-hand resources mean we complete work more quickly, minimising road occupation time.
  • Increased Productivity: Our streamlined workflows allow us to achieve more in less time, reducing disruption and delivering faster results.
  • Improved Reliability: Our readiness for unexpected events ensures we deliver a dependable, high-quality service every time.

A Real-World Example

Recently, we undertook a complex drain connection project, starting at 5 AM. Thanks to our preparation, resources, and cohesive teamwork, we completed the full installation by the end of that same day. This rapid turnaround would not have been possible without our focus on efficiency, communication, and proactive strategy.

At ASL Limited, we believe efficient contractors are key to reducing traffic congestion and keeping our roads safer and more accessible for everyone.
